Jesse Lingard will be in the right frame of mind to face West Ham on Sunday despite his blunder condemning Manchester United to a shock 2-1 defeat by Young Boys in the Champions League, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United had to play for almost an hour of Tuesday’s match in Bern with 10 men after Aaron Wan-Bisakka was sent off.
And they were hanging on for a draw when a misplaced back pass from substitute Lingard in the fifth minutes of stoppage time allowed Jordan Siebatcheu to snatch the winner.
Lingard revitalised his career on loan with the Hammers last season, scoring nine goals in 16 appearances, but returns to the London Stadium on Sunday on the back of last night’s blunder.
Despite that, Solskjaer is confident Lingard will not let it affect him.
"With Jesse, no footballer likes making mistakes but it's obviously part and parcel of the game," said the United manager.
"We'll learn from it, he'll learn from it. We're humans, every footballer makes mistakes.
"He'll pick himself up and be ready to go on Sunday against West Ham."
Lingard rejected the chance to rejoin West Ham this summer and is now in the final year of his £100,000 a week contract at Old Trafford amid concerns over a lack of game time.
The 28-year-old came on as a 72nd-minute substitute last night, replacing Cristiano Ronaldo, who had given United the lead after an excellent ball from Bruno Fernandes.
Moumi Ngamaleu equalised in the 66th minute before the dramatic finale.
