Jesse Lingard could lose his place in the Manchester United first team to Mason Greenwood.
That's according to former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol, who reckons Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already thinking about replacing Lingard with the youngster.
Lingard has featured in both of the Red Devils' opening Premier League fixtures this season, but has yet to score.
There is much competition for places at Old Trafford and Nicol thinks Greenwood is knocking loudly on the first team door.
"Well I would suggest that probably Solskjaer will be thinking about [bringing in youngsters for Lingard]," Nicol told ESPN FC.
"But he will also understand somebody like Mason Greenwood, you cannot just throw him in and leave him to sink or swim.
"You have to gradually get him in. You have to put him in for 20 minutes, then 40, and then build it up.
"At the same time, you can't totally discard a Lingard because if you lose him by saying 'do you know what, you're out, he's in'.
"It just takes some injuries and of course you're going to have to ask a player who you've discarded to perform for you, and that's a very difficult thing to do.
"So I think you'll find somebody like Mason Greenwood will get a lot more minutes between now and the end of the season and that probably will be to the detriment of the Lingard minutes."
