Jesse Lingard questions Manchester United mentality

Manchester United may have a mentality problem and go into games thinking they're already won, according to Jesse Lingard.

United have been consistently inconsistent this season with disappointing results following impressive victories once again this week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was under pressure ahead of a double header which saw United face a returning Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur and cross town rivals Man City.

Yet United went on to surprise everyone by picking up two well deserved victories after putting in brilliant performances.

The results reignited hopes that United are heading in the right direction and with matches against a mangerless Everton at Old Trafford and a trip to the Premier League's bottom side Watford coming up next there was a chance to really kick-on.

Yet, as had been their problem all season, United struggled to break down teams that were happy to sit deep and defend and ended up scraping a draw with the Toffees and losing against Watford in embarrassing fashion.

Victories could have put United right in the midst for the top four but instead they've slipped back down to eighth and it has forced Lingard to call the players' mentality into question.

"It's strange. Maybe it's a mindset thing. Maybe it's our mentality going into the match thinking we've already won the game," Lingard told the Daily Mail.

"If we keep the consistency and mentality we had against City and Tottenham, I don't see why we can't win every game.

"It seems like our mentality changes. To keep that consistency throughout the rest of the season when we come against the mid-table teams, we need to have the same mentality that we did going into the City and Tottenham game.

"When we start with energy and on the front foot, we'll cause team problems all day long."
