Jesse Lingard opens up on overcoming Man Utd setbacks to make it in Premier League

Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard has opened up on the setbacks he had to overcome to make it at Old Trafford.

Lingard says because of his smaller stature, he had to work harder to rise through the youth ranks and eventually establish himself as a first-team player.

The 5ft 7ins forward has also had to contend with injuries, including a lengthy knee lay-off in 2014  - but says the obstacles he has had to hurdle have made him "cherish every moment" at one of the Premier League's biggest clubs.

"I was always small," Lingard told the Official Manchester United podcast. "When I was in the under-18s I played most under-16s games because a lot of people were bigger than me, but it didn't faze me.

"I always worked hard, I always stayed behind, always did the right thing.

"I think it's just working hard, and sticking to the plan but, sometimes you go off course.

"I went on loan, I had to battle there and fight for my place when I came back to United."

Lingard has been linked with a move away from United this summer, but the 27-year-old is determined to prove himself.

"I got injured on my debut so I was out for six months, so I have had a lot of setbacks but if you keep fighting, work hard and keep believing, your dreams will come true," he said.

"It's the biggest club in the world so it's tough to start at the bottom and work your way up.

"There's a lot of obstacles on the way, a lot of highs and lows, but when you finally get to the end you're playing for the first team week in, week out, you cherish every moment that you've been through."
