Jesse Lingard injury update as Man Utd ace limps off in AZ Alkmaar draw

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his side could be without Jesse Lingard at Newcastle on Sunday after he suffered a hamstring injury against AZ Alkmaar.

The attacker was introduced as a second half substitute in the Netherlands but limped off in stoppage time as the Red Devils searched for a late winner.

He pulled up with a tweak in his hamstring which was downplayed by the boss after the game.

Solskjaer says he expects Lingard to be back in time for their clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford after the international break on October 20.

But he conceded Sunday's trip to Newcastle is likely to be too soon as they deal with a fresh injury blow.

"I think he felt his hamstring a little bit," Solskjaer told MUTV at full-tine.

"I don't think it's too bad. He probably won't be fit for Newcastle [on Sunday] but he should be ready for Liverpool."

In his press conference, he added: "He tweaked his hamstring, so he didn't feel he could risk, hopefully it's not too bad."

Lingard has experienced a miserable start to the season and has been unable to help United's struggles in front of goal.

He has failed to register a goal or assist in 2019 and was left out of Gareth Southgate's latest England squad earlier in the day he pulled up with injury.

Lingard and Marcus Rashford were both introduced in the second half against AZ Alkmaar as Solskjaer's side unsuccessfully searched for a winner.

Rashford felt he should have been awarded a penalty after a late second half challenge, with the incident leaving Solskjaer frustrated.

"I just couldn’t believe what I saw," Solskjaer said.

"It was the same against Arsenal , the handball [by Sead Kolasinac on Monday night]. That should have been 2-0. These little things are frustrating now because the boys deserve more."
