Jesse Lingard injury update after Man Utd loanee forced off in West Ham defeat

David Moyes has played down Jesse Lingard's injury as being nothing more than cramp.

Lingard was forced off late on in West Ham's 3-2 defeat by Newcastle, just seven minutes after he scored a penalty.

The Manchester United loanee was replaced by Manuel Lanzini amid fears Lingard had suffered an injury.

But Moyes is confident the winger was merely suffering from a bad bout of cramp and that he'll be back in contention against Chelsea next week.

"I think it was just cramp, I don't think it was anything serious," Moyes said after the final whistle.

Lingard has been West Ham's standout player since temporarily signing for the club in the January transfer window.

The 28-year-old has netted nine in 10 Premier League matches for West Ham, who are in the mix to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League this season.

This weekend's defeat by Newcastle has set them back somewhat as both Chelsea and Liverpool can leapfrog them should they win their games in hand over the Hammers.

But Moyes is trying to remain optimistic at the point.

"I wouldn't say it was a chance lost, it was an opportunity for us to pick up three points," said Moyes.

"We like talking about the Champions League, we love the sound of that when everybody says it, but we're realistic.

"We've said before the quality teams who are around us and below us have been over this course many more times than us, but the way the players are playing here is fantastic.

"Today we made a couple of mistakes which probably cost us the game."
