Jesse Lingard delivers 'shambles' verdict after England crash out of World Cup

Nottingham Forest forward Jesse Lingard has branded referee Wilton Sampaio a "shambles" after England were knocked out of the World Cup.

The Brazilian official made a number of controversial decisions in the match as France beat the Three Lions 2-1 at the quarter-final stage.

Reflecting on the match on Twitter, Lingard was quick to say what he thought of the referee. The 29-year-old also encouraged his countrymen to pick their heads up ahead of Euro 2024.

"Referee was a shambles - head up, go again," Lingard wrote, with a red heart and an England flag.

Lingard will be back in competitive action for Forest when the Reds travel to Blackburn Rovers for a Carabao Cup tie on December 21.

He has also shown his support to former Manchester United and England teammate Marcus Rashford on social media, posting a heartfelt message under the England forward's post-tournament Instagram post.
