Jesmond's Peace and Loaf makes top five in list of UK's best restaurants

A Newcastle restaurant has been named one of the UK's best in an annual list which reflects the views of diners.

Jesmond 's Peace and Loaf was awarded fifth place in Open Table's line-up of Britain's top 50 dining venues, to the delight of Dave Coulson who runs it.

The 2010 MasterChef: The Professionals finalist, who also recently featured on BBC2’s Great British Menu, said he was honoured at the news.

"The team here at Peace and Loaf work tirelessly to provide the best food, service and atmosphere possible and it’s great to see that all of their hard work is recognised nationally,” he said.

Open Table, the world's leading restaurant booking service, revealed its annual list in the Fit for Foodies review category which is compiled from more than 851,000 reviews submitted by verified diners at around 7,600 restaurants.

Peace and Loaf, which creates its menus around seasonal, regional produce and collaborates with the local suppliers, farmers and foragers, beat eateries in Liverpool, Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester and Hampshire to take fifth place among the top 10.

The list was topped by the Michelin-starred Carters of Moseley in Birmingham, followed by The Chef's Table in Cheshire; Liverpool's Röski and Wilson's in Bristol.

The award-winning Jesmond favourite was the only restaurant from the North East to feature in the list which is otherwise dominated by venues in London.

Peace and Loaf has come to the notice of Open Table reviewers before, making the best restaurant last year and also featuring on its list of most romantic venues .

And this year's high placing means another share of the national spotlight following the restaurant's two AA Rosettes and a mention in the Michelin Guide 2019.

Chef patron Dave said: “It’s an honour to achieve a spot in the top five.

"That’s another one for the trophy cabinet that is Peace and Loaf. And this is voted by the diners, so means everything to me and the team.”
