Jersey design and local leaders go sky high

SHIRTS: Lachlan Mahony, Austin Chandler and Brooke Chandler.

It's well-known that the nature of the defence force means having to move around a lot. But what perhaps doesn't receive as much attention is how tough this can be on family members of personnel.

"Each new posting means re-establishing a home, children's education, partner employment, along with a myriad of other challenges, often in unfamiliar locations without a network of friends and family for support," says Hunter Defence Support Network Director and retired Air Vice-Marshal John Quaife.

This weekend's Newcastle Knights match at McDonald Jones Stadium will support Australian Defence Force members and their families who are posted to the Hunter.

The Knights' squad will wear a commemorative training shirt this week that pays tribute to the 80-year anniversary of RAAF Williamtown and 100-year anniversary of RAAF Australia. The player worn and signed shirts will be auctioned following the match online at hdsn.org.au/knights

The propeller aircraft on the jersey in the background is a Vultee Vengeance - apparently the first aircraft operated at RAAF Williamtown. The other is the F-35A Lightning II, the very latest aircraft operated at RAAF Williamtown.

DEFENCE: Lachlan, HDSN Director Amanda MacGregor, Brooke and Austin.

Funds raised through the auction, as well as a 50-50 charity raffle running through to match day will assist HDSN fund workshops, events and programs aimed at supporting and integrating the local defence community into the civilian community.

Mr Quaife said he was thrilled the Knights had provided an opportunity to shine a light on the work they do to support defence force families in the region.

"The Hunter community has had strong ties with the Australian Defence Force since the establishment of Williamtown RAAF Base 1941. Today, continues to be one of the largest single employers in the region," Mr Quaife said.

"HDSN aims to be this local, strong and supportive network. We link the local civilian community with the local defence community, to foster support, integration and collaboratively created solutions to the issues faced."

Leap of faith

HEIGHTS: Brad Rogers will do the stadium abseil for Westpac Helicopter Service.

McDonald Jones Stadium is set to host another fundraiser in a few weeks, however this one won't take place on the ground.

Twenty local leaders are set to abseil off the stadium in August to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Brad Rogers from Rentokil Initial is one of the business leaders who are planning to take the leap for the cause. His partner Cassandra Agnew of oOh!media will also take the plunge.

Brad aims to raise funds through an online raffle with prizes including $5,000 cash for first place, a Newcastle Knights corporate hospitality package, a year's supply of pest control and a $500 food and beverage voucher.

Brad "jumped" at the opportunity to abseil off the stadium to support the helicopter service, as he has a good mate who is alive today because of the free service the charity provides.

"I've always known about the WRHS, but when it comes close to home, the impact is really felt. I am really excited to be participating in such a great initiative in support of what is an iconic service for the region," he said.

WRHS CEO, Richard Jones, said they were delighted to have the Brad and Cassandra supporting the service

"It's great when individuals and organisations are aligned in supporting the community," Richard said.
