Jerry Yates 'watched' by Rangers but Ibrox club face stiff transfer competition for Blackpool striker

Jerry Yates is reportedly a Rangers transfer target but they face stiff competition to land him in January.

The Blackpool striker netted a Lancashire derby double as the Seasiders ran out 4-2 winners over local rivals Preston North End, taking his tally for the season to eight goals. A number of scouts were at Bloomfield Road to run the rule over the 25-year-old, with the Scottish Sun reporting that the Gers were one of them,

It’s understood Blackpool would be looking for a fee of around £5million for the frontman. But with his contract having 18 months left to run by the time the transfer window opens, then this winter could be their last chance to meaningfully cash in on him before next summer. Yates was a key figure as Blackpool won promotion back to the Championship last season. He hit 20 goals to fire them back into the second tier, but Blackpool sit 16th just now, just three points outside the relegation zone.

Antonio Colak is the main striker at Ibrox right now after a red hot start to the campaign. Alfredo Morelos is struggling for fitness and form and his contract is up in the summer. Talks have taken place over a new deal but the Colombian can speak to other clubs in January and Rangers may have to start succession planning.

Sporting director Ross Wilson has form for recruiting from the English lower leagues. Joe Aribo was a particular success story while John Lundstram earned cult hero status during last season’s run to the Europa League final. Tom Lawrence arrived from Derby County in the summer.
