Owner Jerry Jones said the Dallas Cowboys have no current plans to honor quarterback Tony Romo, who walked away from the game to pursue a career in broadcasting.
Jones said it's more about timing and the attention surrounding Romo's decision than a lack of interest.
He said they will do something for Romo in the future, though he couldn't commit to it happening during the 2017 season.
"At this juncture, just by the nature how Tony Romo's (career) has evolved over the last year it has had a lot of recognition," Jones said. "We will look to the future to when we might have more recognition. At this time there are no plans for there to be a large scale public something at the stadium. No succinct plans to do that. Is the idea to that likely? Yes."
Romo has been honored by the Dallas Mavericks and recognized last week by state lawmakers in Austin.
None of that is lost on Jones.
Nor that the Cowboys had a retirement news conference for DeMarcus Ware before the 2017 NFL draft last month, but have not yet done something with Romo.
Well, Ware has officially sent his retirement papers in the NFL and wanted to retire as a Cowboy after spending the last three years with the Denver Broncos.
Romo has yet to formally file his retirement papers.
But it was also about the attention Romo has already received, Jones said.
"There was a lot more awareness," Jones said. "A lot more coverage, just a lot more relative to how Tony's situation has evolved than Ware. All of that has something has something to with why not do something yesterday. The intent is do things and recognize what he's meant to the Cowboys and do it in good time relative to his ongoing career. It's not out of mind. Right now we are good where we are."
