Because of COVID-19, NFL teams did not have in-person organized team activities or minicamps this offseason. The Broncos had a virtual offseason program but players didn’t get any on-field work with the team’s coaching staff.
Denver quarterback Drew Lock has helped players stay up to speed by organizing unofficial practices at a local park. Because no coaches attend the practices, Lock and his teammates are acting within NFL rules by working together on a voluntary basis.
Jerry Jeudy, the Broncos’ first-round pick in this year’s draft, has been among the players practicing with Lock, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. If not for attending the unofficial practices, Jeudy probably wouldn’t have had an opportunity to work with Lock until training camp starts in late July.
Lock showed great leadership by setting up the practices and he is likely helping teammates learn the new offense being installed by Pat Shurmur. Earlier this month, Denver coach Vic Fangio said Lock has done “a great job” learning Shurmur’s offense.
Lock and Co. should be ready to rock when training camp starts up.
