Jerome Baker bulking up for a big workload in 2019

Miami Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker enjoyed a successful rookie campaign in 2018 — his speed and athleticism allowing him to find the football in a multitude of ways. And as new head coach Brian Flores continues to install his new defense, the buzz grows bigger and bigger for Baker. The excitement lies in Baker’s versatility — it’s a key focal point of who the Dolphins want to be as a team and Baker has no shortage of it.

Baker has taken it to heart. With a big year ahead of him, he’s committed to being ready both physically and mentally.

“I got in the weight room a lot (this offseason). That was my main thing, just working out as much as I can and hopefully improve so it pays off in the season,” said Baker. “Today I weighed in at 227 (lbs).”

Keeping the speed won’t be a problem for Baker. But a new set of usages will be a challenge. Baker’s role may push him to the outside in a 3-4 base front — calling on Baker to be more of a pass rusher from time to time.

Such a role will test Baker, he’s not a prototypical build to rush the passer. But Miami’s lack of talent off of the edge is going to force them to get create and call on scheme to be a catalyst for pressure — which will relieve some of the challenges Baker will face in that area.

Still, it’s a bit of a risky proposition — taking a successful rookie player and potentially moving him into a new role. Baker seems up to the task — but will doing so compromise his development as a space linebacker? If it doesn’t, the Dolphins will seem to have another cornerstone player to work with moving forward.
