Jermaine Jenas urges Mike Ashley to back Newcastle United to European football

Former Toon midfielder Jermaine Jenas has urged Mike Ashley to bankroll Newcastle United to European qualification.

The one-time England international who is now a pundit for the BBC and BT Sport, took to social media to praise Steve Bruce for the job at Newcastle - and shared his hope that the Magpies could one day be competing for European football.

Jenas was part of the last Toon side to play in the Champions League under the guidance of Sir Bobby Robson back in the 2002-03 campaign.

Since Sir Bobby's exit in August 2004, the Magpies have only twice qualified for Europe - both times in the UEFA Cup/Europea League and only one of those tours under Ashley's ownership.

The Magpies finished the 2020-21 campaign in 12th position having been battling against the drop for most of it but an amazing run of form over the last six weeks saw their status secured.

Jenas took to Twitter to post: "Congratulations Steve Bruce and Newcastle - strong finish.

"Now come on, time to invest in this team and get the club back challenging for European football."

Ashley, however, is unlikely to back the club to such an extent given his desire to sell up - the hope for the majority of fans being that the Saudi-led takeover bid finally goes through.
