Jermaine Jenas takes early lead in footie5 challenge vs Sam Quek - thanks to Sunderland!

Jermaine Jenas celebrated a first weekend win in the new 2019/20 football season.

The former England international and TV pundit edged in front of Olympic gold medallist and TV personality Sam Quek on Week One of their Footie5 challenge .

And the former Newcastle United star had Sunderland to thank!

Oxford claimed an opening day draw at Sunderland's Stadium of Light, earning JJ a whopping six points in the footie5 ambassadors' personal head to head.

Both pundits got one result each absolutely spot on in their five opening day predictions. Sam called Swansea's 2-1 home win over Hull City, while Jermaine correctly called Oxford to claim a 1-1 draw at Sunderland.

And with this being The Pools, score draws earn you more!

In the footie5 rules a score draw earns six points, a correct score - which is not a score draw - gets three, and the correct result but not score is worth one point.

And because we're generous we give a point just for playing!

Neither Jermaine nor Sam saw QPR's win at Stoke City coming, both predicted Celtic to hammer St Johnstone - but not by seven goals - while Sam correctly tipped Plymouth to win at Crewe, while Jermaine opted for the home win.

But the Premier League kicks off next weekend - and Sam is confident she can bounce back.

You can follow their advice - or select your own fixtures by downloading the footie5 app and have a go yourself. It's available every weekend.

And don't forget, if you want a chance to land our incredible £10million prize the closing date for that game is this weekend.
