Jermaine Jenas 'surprised' Man City got penalty and Kyle Walker red card overturned

Jermaine Jenas says he was 'surprised' to see Kyle Walker's red card and the subsequent penalty for Southampton overturned by VAR.

Man City were struggling at the Etihad in their Premier League clash with the Saints when Walker gave the ball away to Nathan Redmond, who then passed the ball to Adam Armstrong. The striker then skipped past Ruben Dias and was clean through on goal, before Walker rushed in and dangled a leg in front of him and brought him down.

The referee instantly blew the whistle and gave a penalty to the visitors, before also showing a red card to the England defender.

However VAR intervened and after reviewing the footage and sending the referee to check the monitor, both decisions were overturned and City were able to continue on to a goalless draw.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Jenas revealed he was 'surprised' to see the entire decision get overturned rather than just the red card.

"I think to overturn it was big. There was a challenge there that warranted a penalty, definitely not a red card, but for it to be completely overturned, I think we were all surprised."

Southampton were furious with the decision, with manager Ralph Hasenhuttl claiming the referee needed to be braver when making the decisions against the top sides but he was delighted with the result.

Pep Guardiola refused to comment on the situation, claiming he hadn't seen the incident back yet at the time of his post-match interviews.
