Jermaine Jenas slams Man City VAR decision against Tottenham and makes Aubameyang comparison

Raheem Sterling was lucky to avoid a red card against Tottenham Hotspur as Manchester City slumped to a 2-0 defeat in north London.

That's the view of former Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas.

The England international was booked in the first-half for a challenge on Lilywhites midfielder Dele Alli, but replays showed the tackle was dangerous and could have inflicted a serious injury.

Tottenham transfer window verdict

As is the case in the Premier League this season, every major decision is reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

However, Sterling's yellow card was not upgraded to a red one following the check.

Much to the surprise of Jenas who highlighted VAR's inconsistency as he picked out that Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw red for a similar challenge against Crystal Palace last month.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Jenas said: "I thought he was fortunate (to stay on) and that is based on previous challenges that we have seen given by VAR.

"He's late, he's high, I don’t see how it’s any different to the Aubameyang challenge, it's dangerous.

"What I would say on this, I think both referees got the decision right.

"With Aubameyang the red card was upgraded, the referee originally gave a yellow card.

"Here, I think Mike Dean gets it right as well but based on VAR you have to say with the decisions that have been given, I was surprised to see Raheem Sterling stay on the pitch."

Fellow pundit and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards didn't share the same opinion as Jenas.

"Sometimes when it is slowed down, it always look a little bit worse than it actually is," he added.

"I thought a yellow card was the right decision and I thought the referee got it right on that occasion.”
