Glenn Hoddle and Jermaine Jenas believe Tottenham's season can be considered a success if they finish in the top four of the Premier League – even without a trophy.
Spurs look to be back in contention for a Champions League spot, with Jose Mourinho’s arrival following Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking sparking a revival.
Tottenham continued their good start under the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss as they thrashed Burnley 5-0.
Harry Kane’s double, plus goals from Lucas Moura, Son Heung-Min and Moussa Sissoko saw Spurs ease to a victory which takes them back up to fifth in the table.
And, speaking on BT Sport's Score programme, both Hoddle and Jenas said Mourinho doesn’t need a trophy to consider this season a success for their former club – provided he secures a top four finish.
“I think it would be a building block,” Hoddle said.
“Obviously next season he would have four trophies to go for, if he’s in the Champions League or Europa League, but it’s a building block if they get into the top four.
“That’s what Daniel Levy wants year in, year out. With the new stadium and the club as it is, they have to have Champions League football.”
Jenas added: “I think it would be ridiculous to say that it wouldn’t be success based on when he (Mourinho) took over, how the team was playing and their position in the league. It would definitely be a huge success if they just got Champions League football.
“A lot of that is down to Leicester and whether they can maintain the consistency, and it seems as though Chelsea are going to have those inconsistencies within their game, so that’ll open up the door.
“The opportunity’s there, but it’ll be tight.”
