Jermaine Jenas highlights surprise Newcastle United player who has 'taken responsibility'

Jermaine Jenas has highlighted Joelinton's remarkable upturn in form as one of the surprises of Newcastle's relegation fight.

The Brazilian has looked like a new signing with the Eddie Howe shifting the forward into a slightly deeper role.

It's paid dividends so far with the former Hoffenheim forward, one of the standout figures in recent weeks.

Speaking on Match of The Day, Jenas was left encouraged by the Magpies front three against the Clarets, but warned Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton they must chip in with goals if Callum Wilson is to get injured.

Jenas said: "This front three that Newcastle have, Saint-Maximin, Joelinton and Callum Wilson are very important to the way they play. I think from a defensive point of view, they've not been great all season long and we know that.

"There were times today where Sean Dyche said they were - not on the ropes - but Burnley had a good start put it that way. When you've got the creativity of what Saint-Maximin brings to the table, you know that Callum Wilson can score goals.

"It's not a foul for me [In the build up to the goal]. Definitely not a foul for me. That is a top finish there's no disputing that.

"Joelinton is the one that's surprised me over the last couple of weeks. He's shown a real fight and determination. I feel he's got some confidence and a spring in his step. He's taken some responsibility.

"He could find a pass to [Javier] Manquillo but I actually like the fact he wants to take the shot on because he does need to add goals to his game. He needs to join the party.

"They'll not always be able to rely on Callum Wilson. I think just talking there about the injury situation of Callum Wilson and hoping he doesn't get injured, Joelinton needs to step up and Saint-Maximin needs to step up.

"Today their constant link-up, balls over the top, the understanding of what needs to happen when these three come together was there to be seen.

"I thought they were a real threat throughout the whole game. Going forward I saw a threat, a lot more than I've seen over the last couple of weeks.

"It's just so important that they stay fit now. There's some tough games coming up now so they've got to stay fit."
