Jermaine Jenas delivers strong verdict on VAR and the referee in Chelsea's draw vs Valencia

Jermaine Jenas has described the decision to award a penalty against Chelsea midfielder Jorginho in the Champions League draw with Valencia as 'a joke'.

With Chelsea winning the game 2-1, the referee adjudged that the Italian had fouled his opponent in the box and pointed to the penalty spot, a decision which was not overturned by the Video Assistant Referee.

However, Kepa Arrizabalaga was the hero when he pushed Dani Parejo's right sided penalty away to safety.

Valencia did find an equaliser with eight minutes to play when Daniel Wass found a way past the Chelsea goalkeeper, meaning that the Blues would have to settle for a point from the game.

After the match, the decision to award a penalty against Jorginho was not one that Jenas agreed with, with the former Spurs man not impressed by the referee's performance in the closing stages of the match.

“I think it is a joke, an absolute joke to be honest with you," he told BT Sport.

"For somebody to be in VAR and watching this and not to see that he kicks Jorginho and that’s what causes the foul.

"I honestly felt towards the end of the game that the referee was doing all he possibly could to get Valencia back into the game.

"The free kicks he was giving. The fouls he was giving.”
