Jermaine Jenas delivers scathing criticism of one Tottenham player after Newcastle defeat

Jermaine Jenas has said he cannot understand what Davinson Sanchez was doing for Newcastle's goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon (Sunday).

Spurs were stunned in the first half as Newcastle's record signing Joelinton netted his first goal for the Magpies, capitalising on an error from Davinson Sanchez to fire past Hugo Lloris for the only goal of the game.

The goal came on 27 minutes as Sanchez misjudged a pass forward from Christian Atsu as he tried to intercept the ball with his head, only for the Brazilian striker to control the pass and smartly finish with his left foot.

And Jenas was left baffled by the former Ajax man's defending, which he described as "ridiculous" while commentating on the game for BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I don’t know what is going through Davinson Sanchez’s head here, at no point does he open his body," the former Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder said.

"I don’t understand what he is looking at. He doesn’t see where the danger is, it is right behind him. It is ridiculous really, it is shocking defending from Spurs’ point of view.

“The ball is played through to Joelinton and it is a sublime finish to be fair to him. The touch had to be spot on, and he had to get it right, and he did.”

Meanwhile, Jenas fired a warning to his old club about the slow starts to games that has been a feature of their season so far, having fallen behind at home against Aston Villa on the opening day, before turning it round with three late goals.

“It is something Spurs need to address. They don’t start games well," he said.

"There were games like Brighton and Palace towards the end of the last season where they were getting heavily frustrated by teams they should be beating.

“It changes the dynamic and it makes it so much harder.”
