Jermaine Jenas delivers his verdict on Spurs' summer transfer business - and one that got away

Jermaine Jenas believes Tottenham's summer transfer business ensures that they will be in the top four again this season in the Premier League.

Spurs broke their transfer record to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, while Jack Clarke signed from Leeds United before returning to the Whites on loan for the 2019/20 season.

Then on transfer deadline day, Giovani Lo Celso joined Spurs on loan from Real Betis, with Ryan Sessegnon completing a permanent move from Championship side Fulham.

Tottenham were also linked with a move to sign Paulo Dybala from Juventus, but that broke down over complications regarding image rights.

And Jenas said he felt that would have been a key signing to help Spurs challenge Manchester City and Tottenham for the Premier League title this season.

“I wouldn’t have minded one more [signing]," the ex-England international said, speaking on BBC programme Match of the Day 2.

"Actually no, I think the [Paulo] Dybala situation, it is one that would have taken them a lot closer to Liverpool and Manchester City, personally.

“The intent was there though. Bids went in for [Bruno] Fernandes, and for [Paulo] Dybala, and we are talking £64m, that’s not to say that they won’t go again for them in January.

“The intent from the club is to go for those type of players again, the [Philippe] Coutinho loan was another one.

“But the signings they have made I think confirms them as a top four team in my head.

"I still look at the right-back situation and wonder what is going on there, and even the centre-half situation, with [Jan] Vertonghen and Alderweireld running their contracts down, but all in all, I am very happy with their business too.

Jenas and fellow pundit Phil Neville both said they felt Tottenham would win a trophy this season, which Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino cited as his personal aim for the 2019/20 campaign, having lost out to Liverpool in the Champions League final last season.
