Jermaine Jenas defends himself over Harry Kane comments after World Cup penalty agony

Former Nottingham Forest man Jermaine Jenas has hit back at criticism of comments he made about Harry Kane before the start of the World Cup.

The England captain has been in the headlines over the weekend after missing a crucial penalty in the World Cup quarter-final against France. The spot kick was the Tottenham man’s second of the game, with him scoring his first to make it 1-1.

England were trailing 2-1 at the time of the second penalty thanks to Olivier Giroud’s header. And that is how the score stayed until the final whistle, with the Three Lions crashing out of the competition.

After Kane’s penalty miss, previous comments from Jenas have re-emerged on social media. The former midfielder talking about the striker’s record in the big moments.

“My biggest issue with Harry Kane, and he’s going to be a god at Spurs when he decides to retire, and he will go down as one of the best players in Premier League history,” he said back in October. “Finals and big games I think are a problem when it comes to what he’s done in those moments”

After being shared on social media, Jenas has been criticised for the comments, with journalist Mike Keegan writing: “Jermaine Jenas digging out Harry Kane is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in football - and I’m an Oldham fan.” That prompted a reply from Jenas himself.

“Just to add some context to this. I did this interview on the 3rd of October and we were having a debate about great strikers!” He wrote on Twitter.

“But if it works for you to put this out now to create a storm like it was done post the game against France then go ahead.”

Kane and his England teammates returned from Qatar yesterday following their exit from the tournament. The semi-finals between France and Morocco and Argentina and Croatia will take place this week ahead of the final on Sunday.
