A British man believed to be part of an extremist cell has been sentenced to four years in prison in Kenya for possession of bomb-making material.

Jermaine Grant, from London, was arrested in 2011 when police allegedly found chemicals, switches and a bomb-making manual at his apartment in the port city of Mombasa.

He is already serving a nine year jail sentence for forging immigration documents.

Four years will be added to his current sentence. He has denied the charge and is appealing, the BBC reported.

Grant was convicted of possession of bomb-making materials last month, but the court acquitted him of conspiracy over the alleged plot.

After Grant's 2011 arrest, Kenyan police accused him of being involved in a plot targeting hotels visited by foreign tourists.

It is claimed that Grant was sharing his apartment with Samantha Lewthwaite, the so-called "White Widow" who was married to Germaine Lindsay, one of the bombers who carried out the 2005 London terror attacks, that killed 52 people.

Police believe they were part of a cell that was planning attacks in Mombasa on Western interests in the region over Christmas 2011.
