Michigan State released a statement Wednesday saying that senior defensive back Jermaine Edmondson has requested and has been given full release of his scholarship to play his final year of eligibility elsewhere.
In the statement, MSU coach Mark Dantonio said: "In discussions with Jermaine Edmondson following spring practice and in the weeks thereafter, it became clear that Jermaine wanted to play a larger role on the team. After consulting with him in the summer, he felt it was in his best interest to finish his playing career elsewhere. We have granted his immediate release to transfer to another institution to have that opportunity."
Police reports say Edmondson is the man who former Michigan State star and Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green struck in an altercation early Sunday morning that resulted in Green's arrest. Edmondson told police Green actually punched him and "I would like to take further action on this situation and I am willing to fully cooperate."
Edmondson, who redshirted his freshman season (2012) played in all 14 games last season, recording a career-high 25 tackles and two fumble recoveries. He seemingly had been leapfrogged on the depth chart at cornerback.
