Jermain Defoe wants Rangers stay as striker heaps praise on 'special club'

Rangers striker Jermain Defoe insists he wants to stay at Ibrox beyond his loan spell from Bournemouth.

The 37-year-old joined the Light Blues on an 18-month deal in January, but is set to return to his parent club next summer.

But Defoe admits he wants to make the move permanent as his time at Rangers has been 'special' so far.

He told Sky Sports: "I want to stay. It's a special football club - you feel it."

The ex-Spurs and Sunderland marksman is showing no signs of slowing down with 12 goals to his name this season and is currently the Premiership's top goalscorer.

Asked if the former England international could play into his 40s, he added: "The way I feel now, easily.

"I do everything right (to prepare for matches), which is easy for me. My recovery, training, knowing how to manage myself. All the things you should do, I do. I think it's showing in my performances."

Defoe says his relationship with Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard has played a huge part in his success so far.

He said: "If you become a manager you have to become a bit different, you're the boss. But there's times when he doesn't say anything to me because he knows me. There's times when he says to me 'do you want a down day, a day to stay in and rest' - because he knows I'll say 'no I want to play!'. He understands me. He's my ex-team-mate and he knows I love scoring goals."

Rangers are two points clear at the top of the table after champions Celtic suffered a shock defeat to Livingston last weekend.

But the veteran forward says his side are not getting ahead of themselves and says the club needs to show respect to their rivals with plenty of football still to play.

He added: "You don't want to boast about being top of the league, there's still a long way to go. We have to respect our neighbours, everyone in the league and continue what we're doing.

"When you're lifting the trophy at the end then you can do what you want and properly celebrate."
