Jermain Defoe urges Rangers hothead Alfredo Morelos to follow Wayne Rooney example

Alfredo Morelos' self-destruct antics remind Jermain Defoe of a young Wayne Rooney.

But, like all top strikers, Defoe has backed his Rangers team-mate outgrow the petulance that has blighted his 29-goal season.

Rooney earned a reputation as a hothead during his early days at Everton and Manchester United - once famously crashing in a 30-yard volley seconds after aiming a verbal volley at a referee.

Even Defoe himself, widely-regarded as the consummate professional, admits he was prone to a temper tantrum or two in his early days.

However, the 36-year-old is convinced the penny will drop with Morelos in time despite his fifth red card of the season during last Sunday's defeat to Celtic.

Defoe said: "You think about the best forwards, Wayne Rooney had a little bit of that when he was young.

"It's a part of growing up. As you get older, you get more experience and realise you don't really need to get involved.

Steven Gerrard explains why Rangers star Ryan Kent should be let off

"What I would say is, when you're a threat, a top player, defenders don't want to play against you and sometimes you react.

"I had a little bit of that at West Ham when I was young. I used to get involved, got sent off a few times.

"But as you get older you switch off and just focus on the game and scoring goals.

"I'm sure Alfredo, with time, will learn to block it out.

"I just needed to stay on the pitch - missing games, opportunities to score goals.

"Even with Alfredo last night in the changing room, you could see it in his body language - he's gutted because he just loves football.

Celtic and Rangers charged by SFA as Steven Gerrard and Scott Brown face bans

"He's a goalscorer, he wants to play and score goals. He's an international, and if you're missing games you're missing opportunities to score goals.

"Of course he's going to be frustrated but he'll learn."

Morelos is currently serving a four-match ban for lashing out at Celtic captain Scott Brown at the weekend.
