Jermain Defoe on his Rangers starting ambition and the key trait boss Steven Gerrard appreciates

Jermain Defoe says he still has a burning ambition to start matches for Rangers, and admits his recent spell out the team has been frustrating.

The striker netted his 300th career goal in the 2-0 victory over Livingston with a fantastic left-footed volley.

Defoe was delighted to reach the milestone in such spectacular fashion, but insists he's just happy to be back playing in a Rangers shirt again.

He says he still wants to start matches, and the day that desire goes away is the day he'd be as well "hanging up his boots".

He told Rangers TV: "I'm just trying to train well every day. Not miss a training session. I had the injury so I've done a lot of work in the gym.

"It's just about playing, really. Trying to get that match-fitness which is different from training.

"It's been hard. I've been frustrated but I think the manager appreciates that because I feel like, if I get to the stage where I accept not playing then I might as well hang the boots up.

"I was raring to go. I prepared myself really well for the game.

"I know that when you get the opportunity you have to take it."

Defoe says he's delighted to have hit his 300th career goal.

"He added: I'd been thinking about it for a while, but before the game I forgot which is sometimes a good thing.

"I enjoyed it, like you would've seen with the celebrations. It's always nice to score goals but to score my 300th goal like I did, I really enjoyed that one."
