Veteran Jermain Defoe believes Steven Gerrard is working towards the Liverpool job after success with Rangers.
The 38-year-old reckons that the Ibrox boss is on the right path to make a blockbuster return to Anfield, having led Rangers to their first title in a decade.
Defoe, who played alongside his gaffer for England, thinks it is only a matter of time before he takes the top job at his boyhood heroes.
When asked on Darren Bent’s Boot Room on talkSPORT, Defoe insisted that former captain Gerrard is working towards a return to the Premier League champions.
He said: “That’s probably the main goal. That’s probably what he’s striving for.
“Because he’s done so well and that’s what he’s striving for and it’s his first main job really.
"He went from Liverpool Under-18s straight to Rangers, even then people probably thought that was a big job for your first job.

“To dominate domestically was special, but people might look at it and think it’s either going to be Celtic or Rangers, but to compete in Europe as well.
“At some point I think he will go on to manage Liverpool.”
Despite a poor season for the defending champions, Gerrard has previously issued his backing to Jurgen Klopp - going as far to suggest fans wouldn't want him to take over from the German.
"I love him," said Gerrard of Klopp earlier this month.
"The Liverpool fans don't want me to be the manager of Liverpool Football Club.
"They want Jurgen Klopp to continue to be the Liverpool manager - and I'm totally with all of them."
