Jermain Defoe looks to Rangers break benefits as veteran striker makes Falkirk quip ahead of cup clash

Rangers striker Jermain Defoe admits he's stepping into the unknown against Falkirk as he prepares to battle the elements in the Betfred Cup clash.

The 38-year-old is in contention to start at the weekend, but could face something of a culture shock having been used to operating at the highest level.

And the former England international is preparing to battle the elements as well as the Bairns.

Defoe said: "I've never been to Falkirk before, I've heard it is really cold so I will have the thermals!

"I'm really looking forward to it and we will go there to try and win the game."

The striker was left out of Rangers ' squad for the Europa League, but the veteran is taking the positives as he takes the opportunity to rest.

Defoe explained: "I've felt really sharp and fresh in my starts due to the work in the gym.

"Not playing in Europe I stay behind on Wednesday to train hard to keep on the level I want to be at. I still feel like I can improve.

"We have such a strong squad that we can rest players if anyone has a little knock, the mentality across the full squad is top. Everyone is on it in training and doing extra in the gym and that shows in our performance.

"I always listen to my body and be around people who are honest with you.

"I have a great relationship with the manager and we spoke about the European squad and how he wanted me to get the rest in my legs and be sharp for the weekend.

"I have been avoiding injuries and as long as I keep scoring goals I want to keep going. At the minute, I don't feel like I'm 38!"
