Jermain Defoe in Rangers Europa League axe as Bongani Zungu comes into squad

Rangers have axed Jermain Defoe from their Europa League squad as new signing Bongani Zungu comes in.

The Ibrox club have had to leave spaces in their squad due to a lack of homegrown players.

Under UEFA rules there must be at least four club trained players in the squad, as well as eight players trained in their nation.

Clubs can name an A squad of 25 players but if they cannot fulfil the above criteria a smaller pool must be selected.

Allan McGregor is the only club-trained player in the squad, with Rangers also unable to name eight players who were on another club's books in the same association for three years between the ages of 15 and 21.

That's left Steven Gerrard with a 21 man squad and he's opted to leave out Defoe, as well as winger Jordan Jones and centre-back George Edmundson.

An unlimited number of players can be included on the B list provided they're under 21 and have been with the club for three years.
