Jermain Defoe and the Rangers chat that convinced Ibrox hero a new deal is imminent

Former Ibrox favourite Graham Roberts is convinced Jermain Defoe is set for another season at Rangers.

Roberts revealed a passing chat with the veteran striker at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week proved illuminating.

Defoe, 38, is out of contract but has repeatedly hinted he wants to remain in Glasgow having struck up an affinity with the club and fans.

And Roberts is certain the ex-England international will get his wish of an extended stay with the Premiership champions.

He told the Daily Record: "I saw Jermain Defoe when Tottenham played Aston Villa last Wednesday. He was there and I asked if he was enjoying it and he said he loved it.

“In fact, 100 per cent he’ll be there next season! He said he absolutely loves it, he loves Steven Gerrard and I think Steven Gerrard loves him because you know you’ve got a player that won’t cause you a problem and he’s going to come off the bench and get you goals

“They’ve got a squad now. The players who were coming off the bench in the first two seasons probably weren’t up to the standard Steven Gerrard needed.

“This year they had that. Every time I watched it and Jermain Defoe came on the pitch he scored!

“He said he loved playing there, being involved at Rangers. He said it was absolutely amazing.

“It gets to you. You go up there and you don’t realise what it is and then you get these fans and they take you and and they love you and that’s why they are such a great club."
