Jermain Defoe admits Rangers derby goal drought was 'eating me up' as he revels in Celtic strike

Jermain Defoe admitted his relief to finally bag an Old Firm goal as he’s been desperate for a derby strike since day one.

The Rangers hitman grabbed the fourth late on as the Ibrox men humbled the Hoops to stay on track to complete an incredible unbeaten league season.

And the former England star said: “I said to Greggsy after the game it had been eating me up!

“When you come to a club like this it’s the first fixture you look at and as a striker you just want to score in that game.

“The main thing is to win of course. But if you can win and score, it’s always something I’ve wanted to do from when I first walked in to the club.

“This is the game I’ve wanted to score in.

“It was an unbelievable feeling. It’s so special.

“The team performance was amazing.”

Defoe hailed the Gers squad for bouncing back from Scottish Cup disappointment against St Johnstone to keep up the stunning Premiership push.

The Light Blues had the title wrapped up by March but are determined to go through the entire campaign without defeat.

Defoe said: “The character has been unbelievable. From the first day back after lockdown, the long pre-season, I sensed a different kind of focus.

“The lads have been so consistent. You get ups and downs over the season, even the best teams in the world.

“It’s important to stick together on the down days. It’s just been amazing consistency and that’s the hardest thing at the top level.

“We just want to finish it off. Don’t take the foot off the gas and go and enjoy lifting the trophy.

“We want to go and make it a special season and I believe we will do that.”

Gers midfield master Steven Davis admitted the Old Firm win was the perfect pick up on the back of the cup woe.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It was a good game for us after the disappointment of last week and we knew the importance of it.

“We turned up and put on a very good performance. If I was ultra critical we game the ball away a little bit in the second half but it was a strong performance.

“There’s always going to be setbacks and it’s important you bounce back right away.

“We even did that today conceding so early after going ahead.

“But overall we were excellent and deserved the win. We just want to finish strongly in the final two games.”

Kemar Roofe bagged a double and tormented Celts all afternoon and Davis said: “Everyone knows it’s difficult when it’s stop start but Kemar has done really well. He was a nuisance throughout and he’s probably disappointed the season is coming to an end.

“Alfredo took his goal really well and it was a great all round performance."
