Jeremy Vine show caller from Glasgow causes controversy after praising Margaret Thatcher

A Jeremy Vine show caller from Glasgow caused controversy among its Scottish viewers after praising former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

On yesterday's show, a woman called Mary phoned in as the panel discussed tax and elderly care.

She spoke to Jeremy Vine and Owen Jones and said she was very thankful for Margaret Thatcher as, because of her, she was able to buy her flat.

Mary was referring to Thatcher's ' right to buy' policy which enabled council tenants to buy their homes at a discount.

She said: "I paid into a work's pension and I - thank God for Margaret Thatcher in one way because of her, I was able to buy my flat and if I wasn't able to do that I would have been struggling to pay rent today - so I'm very very grateful for that."

Mary also added that she agrees with guest panellist Mike Parry who said that people should "stand on their own two feet".

Part of Margaret Thatcher's legacy remains the death of Scotland’s industries and many in Scotland, still to this day, hold ill feeling towards her for it.

The 1980s were marked by a bitter strike involving a coal mining union and the Thatcher government.

Mines were closed and miners lost their jobs as a result of the industrial dispute.

And many viewers took to Twitter to vent about Mary's comments.

Lesley wrote: "Someone from Glasgow saying Thank God for Thatcher may be the peak of the utter madness we have lived through in the last several years."

Alan said: "Stand on your own 2 feet.....but thanks to the government for their help?"

Wayne added: "Someone in Glasgow praising Thatcher wow never thought id ever hear that"

Lynn added: "She lost me at "Thank god for Margaret Thatcher."

While David commented: "Mary from Glasgow is a supporter of Thatcher who was responsible for the housing shortage and destruction of Scotland's industry.....a Scot supporting thatcher!"
