Jeremy Vine says Eggheads was a victim of its own success as its audience was 'too old'

Jeremy Vine has told how the BBC ditched popular quiz series Eggheads as it wants to attract a younger audience.

Earlier this month it was announced the show would move from the Beeb to Channel 5.

The programme features contestants attempting to beat a panel of specialist quizzers in a test of their general knowledge.

Eggheads first hit our screens in 2003 and current host Jeremy joined in 2008.

He told the Radio Times: “The good old BBC are very aware they need to innovate constantly and bring on a younger audience.

“If you’re a successful show – which Eggheads is with over 2,000 editions – you’re always going to be vulnerable to somebody saying, ‘I think we can find something better’.”

Jeremy, 55, has described the show as “one of the greatest quizzes in British TV history”.

He added: “I’m sure fans of Eggheads will share in my delight it has found a new home on Channel 5.”

It’s thought the series will keep the current roster of expert quizzers when it moves.

A BBC spokesman said last month: “We sometimes have to make difficult decisions in order to grow new shows and we would like to thank the Eggheads and Jeremy Vine, and wish them well with their next chapter.”

Channel 5 commissioning editor Daniel Pearl added he was delighted to welcome the series as the station “grows its audience rapidly”.
