Jeremy Vine caller points out massive fault in UK green travel list

A caller on the Jeremy Vine Show has pointed out the faults in the government’s current traffic light system for international travel.

Jayne from Yorkshire called into the Channel 5 programme this morning.

The panel were discussing the 12 countries on the green list - the places that people from the UK are safe to visit. They include Israel, Portugal and also Singapore.

But the situation with coronavirus changes very quickly, and the caller pointed out, that even if a country is on the list, it doesn’t mean that British travellers will be allowed to visit.

Jayne said: “The reason I rang in is because of Singapore on the green list. My daughter lives in Singapore.”

Jeremy, 56, replied: “Yes, you’re right, and they’ve done quite well, haven’t they?”

“Well up until this last couple of weeks,” Jayne replied. “They are now in lockdown. And I don’t know if you realise but Singapore is particularly strict.

“I mean it’s supposed to be a beautiful place but it’s just the severity of it. All the schools are shut.”

Singapore recorded a total of 248 cases of Covid last week. In comparison, the UK recorded a total of 2,696 positive cases as of yesterday, 19 May.

Jayne added: “People might think they can go but they will not be allowed in.”

There have been many mixed messages recently about the travel arrangements and the easing of lockdown restrictions, with members of Boris Johnson ’s own cabinet contradicting each other.

There is further confusion about whether UK citizens can legally travel to countries on the amber list.

See the government website for more information on where you can or cannot go.
