Jeremy Kyle’s return to the world of television could be blocked by an MP who has declared he should be “held to account” over his axed ITV talk show.
Damian Collins, the Conservative MP for Folkestone and Hythe, has suggested 54-year-old Jeremy should be banned from the airwaves until he has been grilled over his controversial Jeremy Kyle Show and the reported suicide of participant Steve Dymond.
The 46-year-old MP has hit out one year after The Jeremy Kyle Show was pulled from the air amid concerns over the death of Mr Dymond, who took his own life after featuring on the show, with ITV deciding to axe the series a week after the death.
Mr Collins has argued Jeremy should be quizzed after an inquiry was concluded during the last Parliament, but produced no plans for a final report.
Mr Collins told the Daily Star: “Any decisions on whether to pick up on previous inquiries is up to the current select committee, but I would certainly like to see them produce a final report from the Reality TV inquiry.”
He added: “I don’t think Jeremy Kyle should be allowed back on air until he has been held to account for the practices of The Jeremy Kyle Show.”
The Jeremy Kyle Show was axed last May following the release of 3,320 episodes – while the episode which allegedly featured Mr Dymond fail a lie detector test did not air.
The apparent suicide of Mr Dymond sparked an inquiry into how the show was made – but show host Kyle refused to appear before MPs to answer questions about his role on the show.
Over the years, the series was attacked by judges who likened the way Jeremy would snipe at participants to “human bear bating”.
While Jeremy has recently faced a backlash after reports suggested he would soon make his TV return.
Former guests have slammed the show and said Jeremy himself should be banned from a return to the spotlight.
