Liz Truss news - live: PM vows to lead Tories into next election despite ‘mistakes’

The Independent

Moment Liz Truss appears in Commons after mystery absence

The prime minister’s popularity took a nosedive as a new poll revealed 80 per cent of Britons had an unfavourable view of Liz Truss.

Ms Truss’ net favourability plunged to minus 70 according to a YouGov survey - a 14-point drop since last week with just 10 per cent of Britons having a favourable opinion of the prime minister.

Among Tory voters, her support also continues to plummet: 20 per cent had a favourable view of their party's leader, with 71 per cent having an unfavourable view.

The prime minister's current net favourability score of minus 51 among Tory voters is down 26 points since last week.

It comes as armed forces minister James Heappey conceded that Liz Truss is in a perilous position as leader and could not survive any more mistakes.

“I suspect given how skittish our politics are at the moment, not very many,” he said. Pressed on how many, he added: “I don't think there's the opportunity to make any more mistakes.”
