Jeremy Hunt accepts £104k in donations for Tory leadership campaign in one month

Jeremy Hunt has been handed £104,000 in donations to fund his Tory leadership campaign in just one month.

The cash, from a mixture of individuals and companies, gives him the third biggest war chest in the race to be the next Prime Minister.

The best funded campaign belongs to Boris Johnson, Hunt’s predecessor as Foreign Secretary. In May, Johnson added £88,000 to the £77,000 he’d been given since the beginning of the year.

Johnson has accepted a total of £165,000 in 2019 from donors including JCB boss Sir Anthony Bamford.

Dominic Raab remains in second place, but has not registered any further donations on top of the £113,238.99 he had already racked up since January.

And outsider Rory Stewart raked in £50,500 from individual donors over the course of May.

Hunt’s donations include cash from asset management fund boss David Forbes-Nixon and private equity firm Moulsford Capital.

Johnson’s rash of new donations includes £28,000 from Sir Anthony Bamford personally and through his JCB excavator firm.

Bamford had already donated almost £40,000 to Johnson since the beginning of the year.

Hedge Fund manager Jonathan Wood gave £25,000 to Johnson in May.

And the owners of the Regent Group, a Harrow-based private education and real estate firm, gave both Hunt and Johnson £10,000 each.

Rory Stewart’s donations include £5,000 from Lady Edwina Grosvenor, founder of prison reform charity One Small Thing and The Clink, a fine dining restaurant based in a London prison.

Lady Edwina is married to TV historian Dan Snow.

And Stewart was handed £10,000  by Khaled Said, the son of Syrian-born billionaire Wafic Said, a close friend of Baroness Thatcher who was a prominent Conservative Party donor before being linked with a controversial Arab arms deal.
