Jeremy Fowler: Trey Lance could make people forget Jimmy Garoppolo quickly

The unknown under center for the 49ers will be their biggest storyline to follow in training camp. While much of the offseason has revolved around Jimmy Garoppolo’s exit and whether San Francisco should hand the keys to its offense to Trey Lance, the younger QB will have a chance early in training camp to move the conversation away from the veteran signal caller. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler thinks that may happen very early in camp.

Fowler in a radio hit with the Morning Roast on 95.7 the Game in San Francisco gave some insight to what he’s heard about Lance’s offseason, and the early returns are good.

“I’ve honestly heard, especially this Summer when he’s been working out, I was told if he looks like this in camp, the way he’s looking right now, then people are gonna forget real quickly about Jimmy Garoppolo,” Fowler said.

While this is certainly encouraging to hear, private workouts are not training camp, which are not preseason games, which are not regular season games. There are still a ton of boxes to check for Lance.

That said, a hot start to camp where he’s making splash plays, throwing accurately, and putting himself on an upward trajectory would definitely be helpful in quelling some of the concerns about his readiness to play in the NFL.

The next couple months will be vital for Lance, and if he’s playing well enough that people forget about the QB that took the 49ers to two NFC championship games in three seasons, San Francisco could be in for the huge year they envisioned when they acquired Lance.
