Jeremy Corbyn will visit Bootle park today for Labour rally

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is coming to Bootle to ask people to reject the far right ahead of the European elections.

Mr Corbyn will visit Derby Park today (May 18) where he is expected to tell people Labour are the only party that can stand up to the "threat" from the far right".

His visit comes a day before the controversial  MEP candidate for the North West,Tommy Robinson also visits Bootle and Huyton.

Speaking ahead of the rally Mr Corbyn blasted what he sees as "inequality at the top" and suggested it was "neglect" of local communities that had allowed far right candidates to prosper.

He said: "Years of neglect of our communities has opened the door to the far right. It’s up to Labour to stand up to that threat.

“That means rejecting the failed economic system and giving people a real alternative - that unites the many against the entrenched power of the few at the top.

“Divisions in our society existed before the EU referendum, they’re not new.

“If the government pays for tax cuts for the richest by cutting vital public services, it drives inequality between the many and the few. And it's in that space that the far right can prosper."

Bootle MP Peter Dowd shared the news of Mr Corbyn's visit on Twitter.

It's believed Mr Corbyn will make a speech at the bandstand in Derby Park during a rally which starts at 12.30pm today (May 18).

Mr Corbyn slammed the far right, suggesting they would be ineffective and said a "radical" alternative was needed to transform the country.

He said : “Labour’s mission is to unite working class communities in all their diversity around solutions to the problems they face, instead of looking for scapegoats.

“The far right won't take on the establishment - the bankers, the tax dodgers and the big polluters. They won’t invest in our communities, make the wealthy pay their fair share, end insecure work or boost people’s wages.

“When the far right comes to our streets seeking to turn neighbours against each other, we stand together against them.

“Politics as usual won’t defeat them. We need Labour’s radical programme to transform our country and turn the tide of inequality by ending austerity and investing in our communities and people.

“We offer hope, the far right offers only fear.”
