Jeremy Corbyn says he will step down as Labour leader - but not now

Jeremy Corbyn said he will stand down as Labour leader - but not immediately.

Speaking tonight as he leads the party towards a desperately poor General Election result, he confirmed he will not lead any more election campaigns.

But he appeared to be resisting calls to immediately resign after presiding over Labour's worst election result since World War II.

Mr Corbyn, who was comfortably re-elected in his Islington North seat - said he will remain leader during a period of reflection.

He said: "In the election campaign we put forward a manifesto of hope, a manifesto of unity and a manfesto that would help to right the wrongs and injustices that exist in this country. Those who need housing, those who need effective health service that will deliver for them."

"I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign. I will discuss with the party to make sure there is a period of reflection... I will lead that party during that period."
