Jeremy Corbyn must open door to second Brexit vote - or see support haemorrhage

Protest votes are loud, and the UK’s European Parliament elections heard unusually vocal anger from two groups – and it won’t be easy to reconcile.

It is important to acknowledge the results showed no majority for the job-destroying, hardline, no-deal Brexit that would erect trade barriers with our valuable neighbours.

Most voters backed political parties seeking a negotiated withdrawal or to Remain.

But Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party, rising from the ashes of old UKIP, exploited the grievances of those frustrated that Britain has not left.

The Tories may now want to chase Farage, but should remember UKIP won the last European contests, in 2014, then failed to pick up a single seat at the following general election.

And the harsh lesson for Jeremy Corbyn is Labour either supports a fresh referendum to give people another vote on Brexit or his party will continue haemorrhaging support to the Lib Dems and Greens.

Welsh warning

Plans to relocate a Welsh coastal community threatened by rising sea levels is fresh evidence of the increasing dangers we face with global heating.

The lives of people in Fairbourne are effectively put on hold for the next 30 years – and other homes and villages are also in jeopardy.

We must cease polluting the world when cataclysmic climate changes endanger the entire planet, not just a town in West Wales.

Scientific evidence exposes the charlatans who falsely argue this climate emergency isn’t generated by burning fossil fuels or man-made.

We either act now or pay a ruinously high price in the future.

Wills’ thrills

Royal decorum went out of the window when the Duke of Cambridge celebrated his team Aston Villa’s promotion to English football’s Premier League.

Prince William may find a good excuse for an official visit to Birmingham, but we’d advise him to wait a little before going to Derby.
