A 41-year-old man has been arrested after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was hit with an egg during a public engagement outside a mosque in north London.
Mr Corbyn was visiting the Muslim Welfare House in Finsbury Park when he was allegedly hit by a man holding an egg in his fist in his own constituency on Sunday afternoon.
The Islington North MP was not hurt.
The alleged attacker was overheard to say "when you vote, you get what you vote for" and was not thought to be a regular guest at the mosque.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "At around 3.50pm an egg was thrown at a member of Parliament.
"The incident occurred on Seven Sisters Road.
"A 41-year-old man was quickly detained by officers on scene and arrested on suspicion of assault.
"He is currently in custody at a north London police station."
It is believed that Mr Corbyn had been sitting and chatting with community leaders in a friendly atmosphere when a man came from behind and smacked him over the head with an egg.
The alleged attacker was quickly surrounded by people in the room and police called.
He was overheard to say: "When you vote you get what you vote for. I believe in peace. I believe in voting."
Mr Corbyn is believed to have left with a police escort at around 6.30pm.
Mr Corbyn attended alongside Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott and had been given flowers while in attendance.
When arriving, Mr Corbyn was greeted with by women giving him red roses.
Mr Corbyn was taking part in the firth annual Visit My Mosque day as part of his visit.
