Jeremy Clarkson verbally abused by angry shopper after failing to wear face mask

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed he was verbally abused by an angry shopper after he forgot to wear a face mask when he went out to pick up groceries.

The Grand Tour host, 60, who lives in the Cotswolds, opened up about his encounter with an angry punter when he popped out to pick up some essentials last weekend.

Clarkson admitted he had forgotten to wear a face mask in line with government guidance and got a severe telling off.

In his column for The Times, he wrote: "Britain is becoming very bitter for some reason.

"Last weekend I went to the paper shop and remembered most of the things I now need for such a trip: spectacles, phone, hearing aid, tin of boiled sweets, gazetteer and a list of the papers I like to buy when I arrive. But I forgot my mask.

"In the olden days, when there was Enid Blyton and local bobbies gave apple scrumpers a clip round the ear, people would have forgiven a 60-year-old for making such a mistake. But not any more."

The telly star explained how a man jumped out of his car to scold him for failing to wear a mask.

However, Clarkson admits he was left baffled as the shopper who ranted at him was not wearing a mask either.

He went on: "A man leapt from his 10-year-old Toyota to do some remonstrating.

"'Do you not need a mask because you're on television?’ he bellowed. And he hadn't finished.

"In fact his lecture, padded out with much profanity, was so lengthy that I never got the chance to interrupt and point out that he wasn't wearing a mask either. We see this sort of thing all the time."

Clarkson has been enjoying some quiet time at home over the last few months, but was recently tipped for a stint in I'm A Celebrity.

The show is being filmed in wet Wales rather than Australia this year, and bookies have tipped the former Top Gear star to among the unlucky stars heading to a spooky castle.

Bookies at Coral gave him odds of 2/1 to appear on this year's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Clarkson previously admitted he would stick it out in the jungle for nothing less than a £100,000 fee.

Although he may want bosses to increase the price for a stint in Wales, IAC bosses reportedly shelled out £500,000 last year for Caitlyn Jenner - so it's likely they could afford to meet his demands.
