Jeremy Clarkson stops Who Wants To Be A Millionaire after hearing coughing

Jeremy Clarkson stopped Who Wants To Be A Millionaire tonight after he heard coughs coming from the audience.

The host was about to ask Lynne Greenwood from Oldham a £16,000 question when an audience member began coughing.

Stopping the show, Jeremy said: "Marvellous, this is the question for £16,000. I can hear people coughing."

Jeremy then looked around the studio before finding the coughing culprit.

He said: "You’re supposed to cough after the question’s been asked in such a way that Lynne can use it…not just cough constantly before I’ve asked the question."

As the audience laughed, Jeremy asked the audience member: "You better? I don’t care."

Audience members watching the show have to be silent when a contestant is answering a question.

Back in 2001, British Army Major Charles Ingram made headlines when he cheated his way to becoming a winner of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Major Ingram became fascinated with the show and decided he’d win the £1 million prize money at any cost.

In the infamous game, which never actually made it to air, Major Ingram duped his way to the winnings in what became known as the ‘coughing scandal’.

Diana, his wife, and fellow quizzer Tecwen Whittock were accused of coughing every time Major Ingram read out the correct answer, which explained his erratic behaviour and risk-taking on questions he clearly didn't know the answers to.

Charles was arrested just days later and accused of cheating alongside his wife Diana.

They found themselves in the dock 18 months after the historic win, but have always denied the allegations.

Charles and Diana were found guilty of "procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception", received 18-month sentences each, suspended for two years, and each fined a whopping £15,000.

They were also ordered to pay £10,000 towards prosecution costs, which was later increased to £65,000, so the whole saga cost them a massive £115,000.
