Jeremy Clarkson has been criticised for hitting out at road closures near the M4 following a crash that saw a man airlifted to a major trauma centre.
Traffic was held near Heathrow Airport on Thursday morning to allow an air ambulance onto the motorway between J1 and J3.
The crash between a car and a motorcycle initially closed the M4 in both directions with the eastbound carriageway opening after around 40 minutes. The westbound carriageway remained closed for more than two hours, though, while police carried out “accident investigation work," reports Surrey Live.
Tweeting to his seven million followers, former Top Gear presenter Jeremy complained officers had 'lost all sense of proportion' as they responded to the incident.
He began: "Dear the M4 Police. The injured have now been taken care of. So here’s an idea. Open the road."
An hour later he posted again, writing: "Singapore airport in disarray because London traffic plod insist on closing roads for as long as possible. Wish I was in charge."
A disgruntled Jeremy then tweeted: "The police didn’t allow ambulance drivers to attend to the injured in Borough Market for 3 hours. They have lost all sense of proportion."
"To be clear, I was NOT affected by today’s motorway closure. I am merely an observer," he added.
Criticism has followed the tweet with many pointing to its potential insensitivity.
One follower replied: "Presume the police have accident investigation work to which I presume you would want done if it was you or your family member that had been seriously injured?"
Another added: “They can't, until debris has been cleared and it's safe for drivers. There should be a programme made where @JeremyClarkson joins the traffic police and the highways officers. Maybe then he'd stop complaining.”
Some, however, have agreed with the sentiments of the tweet.
One supporter said: “I agree. As soon as people who took part in the accident are helped and driven to hospitals they should just push the cars to the side and open the roads. It's ludacris what police is doing there for so long....”
It comes just 12 days after Jeremy received a backlash, including from Surrey Road Cops, following comments he made about a “nasty crash” that killed an elderly man.
The man, in his 70s, was killed in the crash after his car collided with “a convoy of vehicles” one of of the main routes out of London towards Surrey, along the A4 near the Hammersmith Flyover, at around 1.40am on June 7.
Clarkson, who has more than seven million followers on Twitter , said: “Dear The Police, I know it was a nasty crash in Hammersmith last night but how can it take this long to re-open the road?”
In response to the tweet, Surrey Road Cops invited the television presented to join them for a shift and added that Clarkson had received “ a number of invitations”.
