Jeremy Clarkson saw 2022 in with poached egg and sherry after Covid cancelled NYE bash

Jeremy Clarkson was forced to cancel his big plans for a New Year's Eve party when his girlfriend Lisa Hogan 's daughter tested positive for Covid.

The broadcaster, 61, had big plans to host a grand bash to end the stressful year with 100 people expected to come to his home.

The plan fell through as he found himself unable to ring in the year with friends, who he says have also fallen ill with the virus.

Instead of partying past midnight, the father-of-three had a very tame evening with a "poached egg and sherry".

In his latest column in The Sun, the Clarkson's Farm star admitted that after feeling a sense of lockdown "loneliness" he had been optimistic to end the year with other people.

He made it clear that he loves to spend New Year's Eve with "as many people as possible" and drinking what he suggested a doctor would call "lethal amounts of booze" that would leave him hidden away until January 11.

He went on to say that he had liked partying so much that he had even "enjoyed" coming face to face with Michael Gove when it came time for a New Year's kiss in years past.

Jeremy said that as soon as the Prime Minister had deemed it safe to have gatherings he quickly racked up a guest list of 100 people for his New Year's bash.

With Omicron cases on the rise a number of his intended guests dropped out, with the guest list dwindling down to just five.

When Lisa's eldest daughter tested positive, Jeremy said that they had to "paint a plague cross on the door" and swear off letting guests in.

He didn't allow himself to be disheartened, instead calling a friend to suggest she host the party in her home.

The new host was happy to take on the challenge with the condition that all guests do lateral flow tests beforehand - which Jeremy said "wasn't possible" as "every shop within 100 miles had sold out".

Luck had started to run out, the former Top Gear presenter had gone as far as calling a taxi to another friend's home before having to cancel it as that friend also had caught the virus.

As he saw his friends and loved ones fall ill with the virus, he decided that he was the only person that he knew who would be entering the New Year without a positive Covid test.

He spent the evening in what he called his "quietest NYE ever", even joking that it left him pining for "that party where I nearly kissed Michael Gove".

He penned: "So far as I can tell, the only person I know who’s seeing in 2022 in robust good health is me.

"Which is why, last night, I celebrated the New Year on my own, with a poached egg on toast and a glass of sherry."
