Jeremy Clarkson has revealed he once ended up in jail in France after a gruesome incident at dinner.
The former Top Gear host, 64, explained that when he was 19 he was eating at a restaurant when he found a slug in his meal.
Clarkson recalled the stomach-churning moment during an episode of the fourth series of Clarkson’s Farm, the Prime Video series that follows him running a 1,000 acre farm in the Cotswolds.
“I once had to go to prison in France because of a slug. True story. I went to a restaurant called La Pomme d'Amour and there was a slug in my lettuce,” he told co-stars Kaleb Cooper and newcomer Harriet Cowan.
"The man was so apologetic. He said: ‘You can drink as much as you like on the house’. I was only 19 so I thought: ‘I will then!’ And I did. I was arrested a bit later because I was a bit wobbly.”
The broadcaster reveals the policeman thought he was “paralytic” due to the language barrier between them at the time.
"I was trying to explain to the policeman that I'd eaten a slug and the man had given me a lot of drink,” Clarkson recounted.
“But I couldn't think what the French for slug was. I said: ‘Je mange un escargot sans maison’. They just thought: ‘This man is definitely paralytic’. I got thrown into prison because I didn't know the French for slug.”
Clarkson’s co-star explained to a baffled-looking Cooper that the presenter had said in French to the police: “I ate a snail without a house.”
The fourth series of the hugely popular docuseries began earlier this month.
It shows Clarkson struggling to run Diddly Squat Farm in farm manager Cooper’s absence and recruiting Cowan to help him out.
During the second episode, the former Grand Tour host’s girlfriend Lisa Hogan took a playful swipe at their sex life.
Hogan, who has been dating Clarkson since 2017, made a joke about his sexual prowess as new pigs were being introduced to the farm.
The episode followed pig breeding on the farm, and featured new farmhand Cowan telling Clarkson all about pig anatomy.
When he pointed to one of the pig pens, he asked: “So you reckon these are the girls?”
“Look at their bums and you can see the little clitoris,” she replied, which confused him.
“You can't! They don't have clitoris!” he replied.
“I promise you, they do,” she insisted.
The motoring journalist said to the camera: “Pigs have clitorises, I didn't know that this morning. There has been no morning in the last 63 years I've known that.”
“He says you can't see it,” Cowan then said to Hogan, who quipped: “Jesus, he can't find it either, I'll tell you.”
