Jeremy Clarkson has awkward moment with radio host after Top Gear punch question

Jeremy Clarkson had an awkward moment on the radio earlier after being asked about once punching a Top Gear producer.

The 61-year-old was dropped from the BBC series following the incident, which happened in 2015, and reportedly later settled the case with the producer, Oisin Tymon.

Following his departure from the show, the TV presenter and his two co-hosts - Richard Hammond and James May - began presenting the Grand Tour for Amazon instead.

The assault was brought up earlier today by radio presenter Brendan O'Connor during an interview with Clarkson on RTE Radio - which is the national broadcaster in Ireland.

After mentioning the return of the Grand Tour, O'Connor said: "There was an Irish connection to the reason you had to leave [Top Gear]. The producer you punched was Irish."

The 51-year-old radio host continued: "I know it's all gone through court and settlement and apology and everything. How do you reflect on that now?"

Following an awkward silence, Clarkson responded: "I don't [reflect on it]." He then added: "We don't talk about it, I don't talk about it, that's that."

O'Connor simply said "okay" before moving the conversation on to discuss Clarkson's experience in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Irish Mirror, the TV presenter previously apologised to producer Tymon after settling a £100,000 racial discrimination and injury claim.

The outlet reports that Tymon launched the action against Clarkson and the BBC following a "fracas" in March 2015 that left him with a bloody lip.

It's been reported that at the time, Clarkson said: "I want to reiterate that none of this was in any way his fault.

"I would also like to make it clear that the abuse he has suffered since the incident is unwarranted and I am sorry too that he has had to go through that."

The former Top Gear presenter was said to have been pleased that matter had been resolved, describing Tymon as a "creatively exciting part" of the show, adding: "I wish him every success with his future projects."

According to BBC News, the settlement - potentially in excess of £100,000 - is said to have been contributed to by both Clarkson and the broadcaster.

The Mirror approached Jeremy Clarkson for comment.
